Handsworth is a suburban town in Birmingham, 3 miles from Birmingham City Centre. The name Handsworth originates from its Saxon owner, Hondes and the word weorthing, meaning farm or estate.For many years Handsworth was known as a village with lots of farmland and extensive woodland until, the 18th century when accommodation was built for factory workers, increasing the population and making the village a township.
In 1911, the town had a population of over 68,610 with many new buildings and churches. During World War II the border between Handsworth and its neighbouring suburb Handsworth Wood marked the line between being safe and unsafe from bombing, with Handsworth Wood being an official evacuation zone. The suburb displays a mixture of architectural buildings and periods – among them some of the finest Victorian buildings in the city.
