Knowing the age of your home or house you are about to buy can be important. If you’ve just moved to a house, you’re probably curious to know when it was built.
How do I find out when my house was built
There are various ways of doing this. Asking the seller or your estate agent when it’s not always the best way to get an accurate answer. Whatever your reason, there are several ways to find out when your house was built. Let’s start with the best ones.
Digital Archives
The Digital Archives contain scanned images of HM Land Registry’s historical 1862 Act Register. The original records are in 272 volumes, containing a mix of handwritten or typed pages made from parchment, waxed linen or paper, and printed documents and deed plans. You can use five different fields to help you search: Owner’s name, County or parish, Title number, Volume number or the Page number.
Search local archives
The record office holds archives about the history and heritage of the area. You can explore the archives for research like family history, house history and local studies.
Old Maps
Old maps is the UK’s most comprehensive historical map archive comprising site centred historical maps covering England, Wales and Scotland. They provide a complete step by step picture of land use changes that have taken place from the mid-19th Century onwards, from OS County Series, OS Town Plans and post-war National Grid mapping to unique Russian Maps of UK target locations from the cold-war era. Once you have selected your preferred site location and all historic maps for the same is loaded, the available maps will be displayed.
How old is my house with Land Registry
With Land Registry you can find information about a property in England or Wales, even if you don’t own it. Search by address to find the owner, how far its general boundaries extend and whether it’s at risk of flooding. You’ll need to order an official copy of the register if you need to prove property ownership, for example for a court case. If your property was not sold by the developer who built it, they won’t have any information about its age.
Census records
The census is a head count of everyone in the country on a given day. A census has been taken in England and Wales, and separately for Scotland, every ten years since 1801, with the exception of 1941. The object of the census was not to obtain detailed information about individuals, but to provide information about the population as a whole; listing everyone by name, wherever they happened to be on a single night, was the most efficient way to count everybody once, and nobody twice.
Historic England
The National Heritage List for England (NHLE) is the only official, up to date, register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England – listed buildings, scheduled monuments, protected wrecks, registered parks and gardens, and battlefields. They are the public body that helps people care for, enjoy and celebrate England’s spectacular historic environment.
National Historic Assets of Wales
Cof Cymru provides free, online access to Cadw’s records on scheduled monuments, listed buildings, registered landscapes of historic interest, protected wrecks and World Heritage Sites in Wales. The map-based resource allows users to locate sites, determine their extent and download descriptions. Historic parks and gardens will be displayed on the site during 2019 after the completion of a review of existing sites before the introduction of a statutory register under the provisions of the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016.
Historic Wales
Historic Wales is a map-enabled portal for historic environment information in Wales. It allows simultaneous searching of hundreds of thousands of records relating to archaeological monuments, historic buildings and artefacts held by: Cadw, the four Welsh archaeological trusts, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, and Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales.
